From the Daily Record:
A loyalist march by The Apprentice Boys of Derry in Glasgow was rerouted from passing St Alphonsus RC Church due to safety concerns, following a past incident where a priest, Canon Tom White, was spat on and verbally abused during a 2018 march. Protestors gathered outside the church on November 10, 2024, holding signs that read “No anti-Catholic marches past Catholic Churches.”
Canon White, who has previously spoken out about the lack of community engagement on such decisions, criticized the council for allowing marches that fuel division. Despite police efforts to manage the situation, tensions rose as the marchers initially refused the reroute, leading to a temporary standoff. Police Scotland imposed conditions under the Public Order Act to ensure public safety and limit community disruption.
