From the Metro:

An LGBTQ+ church leader in the UK was arrested following sexual abuse allegations uncovered by a Metro investigation. Over 18 individuals reported being touched inappropriately during services and social functions over 13 months. Alleged victims described repeated instances of groping, including being grabbed on their arms and lower body. Complaints began in December 2022, but initial responses from church leaders were dismissive, characterizing the behavior as friendly or culturally normal, with one leader calling the accused “just a hugger.”

Despite ongoing complaints and testimonies, the church only informed the overseeing district in January 2024, which found insufficient evidence to act further after a five-month inquiry. Critics argue the process minimized the victims’ experiences, equating them to casual cultural gestures. Even when complaints resurfaced, victims stated that their concerns were often ignored or dismissed.

The situation escalated when some victims confronted church officials during services and were threatened with police action if they did not leave. Investigations concluded by May 2024 without broader consultations, leaving victims feeling marginalized. The church has since paused public gatherings, citing the distress caused by the situation. Police have confirmed that a 49-year-old man was arrested and released on bail while inquiries continue.
