From The Daily Signal:

As the Supreme Court deliberates on U.S. v. Skrmetti, a case addressing state bans on transgender medical procedures for minors, one mother shared that her child began transitioning as a toddler.

Michelle Callahan-DuMont, mother of a 10-year-old biological male identifying as female, traveled from Arizona to Washington, D.C., to join the American Civil Liberties Union’s “Free to Be Ourselves” rally on Wednesday. Callahan-DuMont said her child, Violet, “knew since birth” and started transitioning at just over one year old. “Violet told us when she was 1 and a half”.

The case under review will determine the fate of laws like Tennessee’s, which protect minors from irreversible transgender interventions. Arizona, where Callahan-DuMont lives, enacted a similar law in 2022 under former Governor Doug Ducey. If the Supreme Court strikes down Tennessee’s law, Arizona’s legislation could also be overturned.

In an interview with CNN, Violet expressed fear about being harmed for identifying as transgender. Callahan-DuMont recounted the child’s reaction to the 2024 presidential election results, quoting questions such as, “Are we going to have to move? Are they going to take me away from you? And am I not going to be able to get my medicine?”

The family has openly shared Violet’s journey on social media, advocating for transgender rights and encouraging support for Democratic policies. One Threads post urged votes for the Harris-Walz ticket, emphasizing its importance for “Violet’s healthcare & safety.”

Critics argue that politicizing a child’s experience raises ethical concerns. Callahan-DuMont’s public advocacy for her child has sparked debate amid increasing scrutiny of transgender issues. Violet also voiced frustration with political messaging against transgender identity, saying it made him feel “dead inside.”

The Supreme Court is expected to rule by June 2024, potentially reshaping the legal landscape for minors undergoing gender-related treatments. The decision could have profound implications for state laws and the broader cultural debate over parental rights, medical ethics, and the role of government in safeguarding children.
